When it comes to media, both old and new, one state that stands out above the crowd is California. Not only is California full of celebrities, but large cities, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, have gone a long way in making it the center of the media and marketing world. Newspapers like the LA Times and San Diego Tribune have been among the most popular in the state, as well as the entire country, for many years. But this brings us to the question of whether or not new media California is taking over.

Over the past couple of years it has become clear that major newspapers in the state, as well as smaller ones, are losing readership and market share. Why is this happening, you may ask? The answer is simple: new media California.

Since “old media” was strong in the state of California it only makes sense that the new media markets are going to follow suit. This is easy to see in many ways. To start, take a look at how much time, money, and resources newspapers are putting into their respective websites. Not only are they offering top notch news online, in addition to real time breaking news, but they are also increasing ad revenue via the internet as well. More and more companies are interested in advertising online as opposed to in newspapers. This makes perfect sense when you begin to think about the number of people who are no longer reading the newspaper, but instead relying on the internet day after day.

Remember the days when the Yellow Pages dominated the world? If you wanted a phone number or address this is where you turned. Phonebooks in California were huge, and every business wanted to market their services in them because of the sheer number of households they were delivered to. New media has changed this industry as well. Now, when somebody is looking for contact information they head to the internet to find it. The same holds true for businesses that are trying to decide where to spend their marketing dollars.

While new media California grows, traditional media, including but not limited to newspapers and the Yellow Pages, continue to decline and lose market share. This trend is sure to continue into the future.
